Project Theseus

Overview

Project Theseus is the Arasmas Labs initiative focused on developing Nyx: a modular AI ecosystem designed to evolve alongside changing hardware, software, and artificial intelligence technologies. We intend to explore the idea of a system that can be continuously updated and improved while still maintaining a coherent and consistent identity.

Right now, the project initiative is focused on developing the Nyx Core and building the functional "masks" that will allow the system to operate in a variety of contexts. The first functional mask being developed is the Librarian, which will serve as a personal AI assistant capable of managing information, performing tasks, and providing insights based on user input and preferences. The Librarian will be the first functional component of the wider Nyx ecosystem, and will serve as a foundation for future development of additional masks and capabilities.

The project explores how AI can be developed as an expandable open source system rather than a disposable application, combining software, dedicated hardware, controlled networking, and specialized operating modes.

Current Focus

Development is currently centered on establishing the Nyx Core and building the Librarian capability as the first functional component of the wider ecosystem. Current development is focused on creating a modular, multi-agent AI system starting with a functional LLM and a set of tools for managing information.

We are currently working on building a personality for Nyx, selecting traits and behaviors that will define how the system interacts with users and other systems. The goal is to create a personality that is engaging and approachable, while also being capable of providing useful insights and assistance regardless of the LLM being used. The personality will be designed to be adaptable and flexible, allowing it to evolve over time as the system is updated, with the current plan being geared towards moving Nyx.0 from a functional Windows prototype to a platform-agnostic system capable of running on a variety of operating systems and hardware configurations.

This will be a large undertaking, but with the help of AI tools and a modular architecture, we believe it is possible to create a system that is both powerful and flexible, with the ultimate goal of running it all on an ArchLinux system with a custom kernel and a minimal set of dependencies.

This is all planned as a long-term solo development project, with the current goal of having a functional prototype of the Nyx Core and the Librarian capability within the next 12 months.

Naming Convention

The name "Theseus" is derived from the Greek myth of Theseus, most specifically the story of the ship of Theseus. We intned to explore the idea of a system that can be continuously updated and improved while still maintaining its identity, much like the ship of Theseus in the myth. The name also reflects the idea of a journey or quest, as we work to develop and refine the Nyx AI ecosystem.

The name "Nyx" is derived from the Greek goddess of the night, who was often associated with mystery, darkness, and the unknown. The name reflects the idea of exploring the unknown and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with AI, as well as the idea of creating a system that can operate in the background, quietly and efficiently, much like the goddess Nyx herself.

It is my intention to use the Nyx AI ecosystem as a lantern in the darkness, illumunating the path forward for personal AI development and exploration. Meanwhile, Theseus will serve as the vessel that carries us forward on this journey.
